The Roswell Incident (1/2)

"I don't laugh at people any more when they say they have seen UFO's.

I've seen one myself!"

We woke up at a Walmart in Alamogordo, NM well rested and a ready for a brand new day! Our first task, was a 117 mile drive Northeast to Roswell, for the Cross Country Couple's "Can’t Miss Attraction" for New Mexico; The International UFO Museum and Research Center. In early July 1947, An unidentified flying object (UFO) crashed on a ranch Northwest of Roswell, New Mexico. This is the only fact in which everyone agrees! In the years since, the origins of this object has fueled claims of cover ups, decades of debate and provided the inspiration for countless books and movies.

According to the International UFO Museum and Research Center, below are the events which occurred in Roswell, New Mexico during July of 1947!

*Rancher, Mack Brazel rode his horse out to check on his sheep after a fierce thunderstorm the night prior. While riding through the ranch, Brazel discovered a shallow trench gouged into the ground several hundred feet in length, and unusual pieces of metal debris scattered over a large area. Brazel stated the debris had very peculiar properties unlike anything he had ever previously seen.

*A day or two later, Brazel drove into Roswell, and reported the incident to County Sheriff, George Wilcox, who then reported it to Maj. Jesse Marcel, Intelligence Officer stationed at Roswell Army Air Field.

*On the morning of July 7, 1947, Rancher, Mack Brazel, Sherriff Wilcox, and Maj. Marcel all went to the crash site to investigate. Upon viewing the crash site, Maj. Marcel concluded something exploded above the ground creating a debris field over ¾ of a mile. Marcel held a lit cigarette lighter against a piece of the thin metal foil-like debris, but the material would not bend or burn! In addition to the foreign foil-like metal material, Maj. Marcel found small weightless I-beam metal structures measuring 3/8 inch by ¼ inch, which would neither bend nor break. Some of these I-beams had indecipherable purple shapes and characters along the length. Maj. Marcel also stated the debris was definitely not part of a military aircraft, missile, rocket or weather balloon, and had no idea of the origin of the wreckage.

*The crash site was closed for several days while military police transported the wreckage back to the Roswell Army Air Field where it was crated and stored in a hangar.

*On July 8, 1947, at 11:00 am, Lt. Walter Haut, public information officer, at the Roswell Army Air Field issued a press release stating the wreckage of a crashed disk had been recovered.

*By 2:26 pm, the press release was picked up by the Associated Press, and headlines read; “The Army Air Force here today announced a flying disk had been found.”

*The Roswell Army Air Field commanding officer, Col. Blanchard, ordered Maj. Marcel to the Fort Worth Army Air Field to report his findings to Brig. Gen. Roger Ramey. Maj. Marcel had brought to Fort Worth some of the wreckage he found and placed the debris on the desk in Gen. Ramey's office.

*Maj. Marcel was called out of the office by the General Ramey, and lead to another room down the hall.

*Upon their return to the General's office, the wreckage that had been placed on the desk was gone, and a weather balloon was spread out on the floor. A military photographer then took the now-famous photo of Maj. Marcel with the weather balloon in Gen. Ramey's office. Later that afternoon, Haut’s original press release about the discovery of a flying disc was rescinded, and a second press release was issued stating, “Weather balloon was mistakenly identified as the wreckage of a flying saucer” From that day forward, the military has tried to convince the news media the object found near Roswell was nothing more than a weather balloon.

Was it a weather balloon or a flying saucer which crashed onto a Roswell ranch in July 1947? Both sides have very compelling evidence and arguments. The government has photographs and documents displaying proof of a weather balloon in Roswell in 1947. On the other hand, the UFO museum has on dozens of signed affidavits on display attesting to the eye witness accounts of the presence of a UFO. Everyone will need to examine the evidence for themselves, and draw their own conclusions. I personally believe something very unusual happened in Roswell, NM in July 1947, but most likely we will never know exactly what that something was! Please see the pictures below of our visit to The International UFO Museum and Research Center.

Do aliens really exist? Famous British Theoretical Physicist; Stephen Hawking believes so, and said, “In a universe with 100 billion galaxies, with each containing hundreds of millions of stars, it is unlikely that Earth is the only place where life has evolved”. I too share Hawkins belief in the existence of extra-terrestrial life. From a Darwin perspective, if life was able to evolve from a primal ooze over millions of years, then it is hard to believe somewhere in a universe vast beyond our understanding, evolution has not occurred elsewhere. From a religious perspective, if you believe God possesses the power to create heaven and earth, then he must also have the ability to create life on other planets as well. Hawkins also believes humans should not attempt to contact alien life, and said. “If aliens ever visit us, I think the outcome would be much as when Christopher Columbus first landed in America, which didn’t turn out very well for the American Indians.” I once again agree with Hawkins that it would not be wise to make a first contact with a species more advanced than humans.

Years ago, I had seen the movie "Roswell", so I already had a basic understanding of the incident. After going through the UFO museum, I do believe there was a cover up by the government. There were dozens of signed affidavits on display from eye witnesses in Roswell! These people were ranchers, military officials, an engineer, a nurse, police officer, and many others who signed under oath what they witnessed with such distinct detail! They described the alien bodies discovered, the foreign metal debris, and the scene of the crash. In accordance with one of the eyewitness’s wills, his affidavit was only to be publicly released posthumously! Why would someone go to such great lengths to reveal the truth after their death unless they feared for their life? Radio newscasters investigating the incident were stifled, and records of what occurred in Roswell were admittedly destroyed. Why in the world would a weather balloon warrant such controversy? It's hard to deny there is at least some truth to the eye witness version of the story. You be the judge! Please see some of the affidavit's below.

I expected Roswell to be a gigantic tourist trap with little green men spattered from one side of the town to another, but this is not what I found. Most of the alien stores were confined to a two block radius surrounding The International UFO Museum and Research Center. The rest of Roswell was a nice middle class suburban community with all the amenities one would expect from such a place including very friendly residents. Although Roswell was not our new home, it was my favorite town I visited in New Mexico!

After departing UFO museum, we drove across the town to a Walmart to spend the night.
